About Child Car Seat Group 0+/1/2/3
Baby safe on board - child car seats group 0+ /1/2/3
For most parents-to-be, car seats are one of the most important purchases to be made during pregnancy. There are a number of important factors to consider in order to ensure safety and comfort for the baby. At the same time, a car seat or infant carrier should be practical and handy. We have summarised all the important information for you so that you can get an overview and make the right choice.
What does car seat group 0+/1/2/3 mean?
The designation of the car seat groups goes back to a European standard value and does not, as one might assume, refer to the age of the child, but to the respective weight.
The car seat group 0+ refers to baby seats that can be used from birth up to a weight of 13kg. As soon as the baby's weight exceeds 13kg, you should switch to the next larger group. Babies and toddlers should ride rear-facing for as long as possible, otherwise they could suffer major injuries in an accident. The reason for this is the barely to very weakly developed musculature in the neck and throat.
Group 1 follows and can be used from a body weight of 9-18 kg. In this seat group, too, child seats can usually be installed in a rearward-facing position. At toddler age, the change to group 2 is made again.
Group 2 is suitable for children with a body weight between 15kg and 25kg. It is the penultimate group that exists for child car seats.
Group 3 ends with the weight group of 22-36kg and thus also ends the child seat obligation for most children, as they have then also reached the corresponding body height or the necessary age. However, you should still check whether your child is big enough to travel without a child seat.
The designation "0+/1/2/3" is a so-called mixed group. This car seat for children can therefore be used from birth up to a weight of 36kg. These seats can be adjusted in stages and thus adapt to the weight and size of the child.
From what age is the group 0+/1/2/3 suitable?
The car seats of this group can be used from the birth of the child. The end of the period of use cannot be clearly defined, as every child grows at a different rate and the body size of children can also vary greatly within an age group. On average, car seats in the 0+/1/2/3 group can be used until 12 years of age. To ensure the greatest possible safety, you should also check the description of your car seat.
Can the seat be installed in any car?
All car seats can be installed in a car. However, there are two different mounting methods. A very well-known and especially safe system is the ISOFIX system. With this method of attachment, the child seat is connected directly to the car seat and is securely fastened. Be sure to switch off the side airbag if you have mounted the child seat on the front passenger seat!
If the car or the child seat does not have an ISOFIX system, many child seats can also be fitted using the car's seat belts. Before buying, always check whether your car and the child seat have a compatible system.
