Baby care
When a baby is born, it always means that parents have to prepare themselves for a big change. You have to familiarise yourself with new tasks and a lot of responsibility - this includes, among other things, the baby's personal hygiene.
With an infant, this is very comprehensive, as the child is of course not yet able to wash and care for itself. In addition to changing nappies, parents also have to bathe the child, cut its nails, clean its navel, apply cream to its skin and dress it in comfortable clothes. This may seem like a lot at first glance, but after a few weeks, routine usually sets in and the baby's personal hygiene is no longer an obstacle.
Uncertainty, by the way, is not a problem and is completely normal if you have no experience with children. In this case, it is a good idea to contact the postnatal midwife at the clinic, who will explain all the tasks in detail. Go to
Important: For girls, the intimate area should always be washed from front to back so that no bacteria can get from the bottom to the vagina. For boys, it is important not to pull back the foreskin. When closing the nappy, the member should be held down so that the urine really stays inside the nappy.
After the birth of a baby, a small remnant of the umbilical cord usually remains in the belly button, but this usually comes off on its own after a few days.
Nevertheless, always keep this area dry and only use water instead of care products such as powders or lotions - this is completely sufficient. Important when changing nappies: Make sure that the navel is above the nappy so that it does not start to chafe under the material and lead to painful inflammation.
In the event of navel inflammation, it is best to contact the paediatrician directly.
